Here you go, my new design, finally written down!

This time only available as a pattern-wool-kit made in collaboration with Renaissance Dyeing.

(Like my previous project: the Urban Troubadour capelet/cowl/hood).

The Bohemian Rhapsody is a crocheted wrap or shawl made from the most delicate and soft Lace Merino yarn, hand-dyed using plant-based dyes.

This design has 75 different colours and the 144 squares are crocheted and immediately joined thus creating a one piece wrap without seaming. Each square has its unique colour combination based on three different crochet motives.

Bohemian Rhapsody is een gehaakte schouderdoek of sjaal gemaakt uit de allerfijnste en zachtste lace-merino, ambachtelijk gekleurd op basis van plantaardige kleurstoffen.

Opgebouwd in één stuk zonder naaiwerk want gemaakt door 144 vierkanten te haken en ze tegelijkertijd aan elkaar te hechten.Het bestaat uit 75 verschillende kleuren en de vierkanten zijn elk in een verschillende kleurcombinatie, met als basis drie verschillende haakmotieven.

The Bohemian Rhapsody design is only available as a kit because it is made for/with the 75 colour range of Renaissance Dyeing's basic Lace-weight Merino yarn.These colours are so exceptional, beautiful and hard to be compared to any other yarn. I wouldn't know where to find another yarn in a 75 colour range.That's why here wool and pattern unite!

Naturally plant dyed wool is vibrant, cheery and energetic in comparison to chemical dyed wool. The colours seem to match every time, even the more unusual the combination, the better it seems.

Dit haak-ontwerp is enkel als kit beschikbaar omdat het gemaakt is voor en met de 75 kleuren uit het basisassortiment Lace-weight Merino van Renaissance Dyeing. Deze kleuren zijn zo bijzonder en zo mooi dat ze met geen enkel andere wol te vergelijken zijn. En daarom vormen patroon en wol één geheel. Ik zou ook echt niet weten waar je nog wol in een 75 kleuren assortiment zou kunnen vinden.

Plantaardig gekleurde wol is, in tegenstelling tot synthetisch gekleurde wol, levendig, vrolijk en energetisch. De kleuren vloeken niet met elkaar, hoe meer ongewone kleurcombinaties, hoe beter, eigenlijk.

A year ago, while I was knitting a scarf of 40 colours from the same yarn, the idea came to me to make a design with the entire 75 colour range. This eventually turned into a crochet project, because I felt that the colours flourished better in these "granny" crochet motives 

..Would it surprise anyone if I say that Klimt, Hundertwasser and Niki de Saint Phalle are my favourite artists..?

Een jaartje geleden had ik al eens een sjaaltje gebreid met een 40-tal kleuren uit hetzelfde wol-assortiment. Toen rijpte het idee om met het volledige 75 kleuren-pakket een ontwerp te maken. Het werd uiteindelijk een haakproject omdat ik vind dat bij het haken van de zogenaamde “granny” haakmotieven kleuren extra tot hun recht komen.

Het zal niemand, denk ik, verbazen dat mijn favoriete beeldende kunstenaars, Klimt, Hundertwasser en Niki de Saint Phalle zijn.

While I was crocheting this design, it felt like with each motif a new colour memory seem to surface....There was the square that brought me back to the Christmas atmosphere of my childhood, the square that revived my visit to Sweden, the square that reminded me of a sweater I used to have and cherished, etc..
This may sound weird but each colour-combination materialised intuitively, one can say that the colours picked me instead of me choosing them.

It was a truly magical project, not a fast one, as the wool is very thin, but it was a fantastic process all-together and to my surprise I was quite sad when it was finished. 
To be done again anytime!

But other projects await me first.

Terwijl  ik deze sjaal aan het haken was ontdekte ik, dat bij het ontstaan van elk motief ook een kleurherinnering naar boven kwam, zo was er bijvoorbeeld een vierkant die mij herinnerde aan de kerstsfeer van mijn kinderjaren, een ander aan een bezoekje naar Zweden, of aan een truitje die ik vroeger koesterde enz…
Elke kleurcombinatie is intuïtief ontstaan, het was eigenlijk zo dat de kleuren mij kozen ipv dat ik de kleuren koos, hoe raar dit ook klinkt.

Het was echt een magisch haakproject, die weliswaar niet heel snel vooruitging, de wol is toch heel fijn, maar ik vond het echt fantastisch om te haken en was zelfs, tot mijn verbazing, ontgoocheld toen het af was. Ik zou het zo opnieuw maken.

Maar ja, nu toch eerst een paar andere ontwerpen afwerken.

A while ago, when I discovered the website of Andie Luijk, the woman behind Renaissance Dyeing, I was immediately fascinated by her incredibly beautiful hand dyed wool. She manages to conjure 100 different colours from different plant dyes.
Everyone who likes to work, like me, with plant-based dyes, knows how hard it is to procure all these different tones. It's a real mystery to me how Andie succeeds and I'm secretly jealous on her for her skills.

I haven't had the chance yet to visit her colour farm in the French Pyrenees, but I hope to treat myself to this trip next summer and then I might get a glimpse and discover some of her secrets.

Besides dyeing and selling her magical wool, she also gives fun and interesting workshops.. please have a look on her website!

For me, working with plant dyes feels like a process of alchemy or even magic, to connect with the world of colours and plants has a healing power on the body and mind. I can recommend it to anyone.

Toen ik een tijdje geleden de website ontdekte van Andie Luijk, de bezielster achter Renaissance Dyeing was ik meteen in de ban van haar onvoorstelbaar mooie,  ambachtelijk gekleurde wol. Zij slaagt erin om, zo eventjes, een 100-tal verschillende kleuren uit diverse plantenkleurstoffen te toveren.
Iedereen die, zoals ik, graag met kleurstofplanten werkt, weet maar al te goed hoe moeilijk het is om al die verschillende tinten te verkrijgen. Het is mij dus echt een raadsel hoe zij dat allemaal doet en ik ben natuurlijk stiekem jaloers op haar vakmanschap.

Ik heb nog steeds niet de kans gekregen om haar een bezoekje te brengen in haar kleuren-boerderij met gites in de Franse Pyreneeen.

Daar ga ik zonder twijfel volgende zomer voor mijzelf eens een tripje naartoe organiseren en hopelijk zal ik dan een glimp van haar geheimen ontfrutselen.

Want naast het deskundig verven en verkopen van haar prachtige wol, geeft zij ook allerlei leuke en interessante workshops, neem eens een kijkje op haar website !

Met kleurstofplanten werken beschouw ik zelf als een vorm van alchemie en zelfs magie, het doordringen in de geheime wereld der kleuren en planten werkt helend op lichaam en geest. Ik kan het iedereen van harte aanbevelen.
